The Gender Equality Festival
Sibiu
5th Edition
The Gender Freedom and Equality Association - A.L.E.G. invites you to participate, between 12 and 14 February, to the "Gender Equality Festival".
The Gender Equality Festivals offers teenagers another kind of Valentine's Day: a campaign against couple violence and gender-based stereotypes. In the last years, Romania started to see more campaigns fighting against domestic violence. Our festival is different because instead of drawing attention to the ugliness of violence, it promotes the opposite model: consideration for the Other. This is also the theme of the brochure launched by A.L.E.G. at the Festival: "Cupid's Recipes: From the Experiences of Ordinary Teens".

TheGender Equality Festival brings together the two halves: Her and Him, to make them solve the apple of discord between the sexes. We are trying to trigger some key questions: what kind of a partner am I? What is the equality between men and women? Are the roles of men and women fixed? How do the prejudices influence our couple life?
This is the 5th edition of the Gender Equality Festival and it will also be a special one. Entry to all events is free and the festival includes forum theatre, documentaries, street events and a "living" library.
The project is financed by the Body Shop Foundation and Global Fund for Children. Local partners: Gong Theatre, ASTRA Library and ASTRA Film. Media promoters: Zile şi Nopţi magazine, Kiss FM and Sibiu 100%. Sponsors: Baumax, Honterus Printing House, Feeling.

- The living library – an event which brings you face to face with your own prejudices. "The living library" is a place for conversation where books are actually people who can tell you surprising things about truths which you considered generally valid, such as women can't drive or men are insensitive. It functions like any other library: at the entrance you find a catalogue of the available books and you can choose one which interests you. You borrow that book for a limited amount of time, maximum 30 minutes and you read it in private. The books from our library are related to prejudices about men and women. You will find the manager women, the feminist, the driver women or the male psychologist.
- Choose your words! - street action during which couples may dedicate to each other messages "written" with the help of our "letter-volunteers". Do you want to offer your dearest a unique present for Valentine's Day? Come to Nicolae Balcescu Street on Friday (from 1.00 p.m.) or to Promenada Mall on Saturday (from 4.00 p.m.) and look for the ALEG volunteers who will help you make up the key word which describes your relation. Then you will receive a photo of it and the "Cupid's recipes" brochure as a gift.
- Forum theatre – a form of educational theatre which involves the public in solving problematic situations. Under the title "Roles of life" five students of the Sibiu Theatre School play situations which explore the pressures which boys and girls are subject to in the private relations. The spectators, mainly students and high school teenagers, will be challenged to discuss about gender stereotypes and to find solutions which they may test by themselves, by replacing the actors.
